Killer Cake Decorating Ideas in Minutes
Do you ever worry that you won't be able to come up with a great cake decorating idea in time to fill an order or to make a cake for a special event?
If you're like me, one of your worst visions is of a blank buttercream canvas - that remains blank. And, one of your best visions is of your cake, surrounded by admirers taking photographs of it.
So how do you get from cake decorator's block to a killer cake decorating idea in just a few minutes? You steal 'em! Actually most cake decorating professionals get their cake decorating ideas from other cake decorators.
If you search Google Images you will find thousands of cake decorating ideas. Forums and cake decorating membership sites can be very helpful resources for finding (and sharing your own) cake decorating ideas.
For example, here a really cool cake decorating idea we found online.
Piping with Cookie Cutters
While cookie cutters come in just about every shape you can imagine, we'll use the star shaped cooker cutter just for an example since stars are a natural for so many cakes: Fourth of July, "Twinkle, twinkle Little Star" baby shower theme, "Congratulations!" cake, celestial theme, etc.
Did you ever try piping a star freehand? It's not easy. Stencils can be used of course, but here's an easier and quicker method:
- Press the cookie cutter gently into the smooth (crusted) icing, just enough to leave an impression.
- Using an icing bag fitted with a round tip, trace the outline of each of the stars.
- You can now fill in your perfect stars with something like:
- Pearl, gold or silver coloring dust to make the stars twinkle.
- Icing gel.
- Silver cake decorating beads.
- Buttercream (Using your star tip, fill in the stars with colored icing. A Fourth of July Cake, for example, could have red, white and blue stars.)
- Your turn!
You probably already have some cookie cutters in your kitchen. If you want a specific shape or size that you don't have or can't find, try a large craft store, such as Michaels, or go online to baking supply site like Wilton's.
Cake decorating ideas like the one above assume you have a smooth surface on your cake. If you haven't yet learned how to smooth buttercream icing on your cakes or how to apply rolled buttercream or fondant, you can still decorate cakes for various occasions while you're working on advancing your skills.
For example, you can decorate a cake that has been frosted in fluffy, peaks (like on the frosting cans, but hopefully with your made-from-scratch frosting!).
Just take a great cake that you've baked and frosted, and then sprinkle it with shaved chocolate, grated coconut (fresh out of the package or toasted), finely chopped nuts, candied red hearts, gumdrops or colorful candied sprinkles.
Easy to implement cake decorating ideas, like the ones just mentioned, and more advanced techniques, like smoothing buttercream and applying rolled fondant, are found in "Cake Decorating Made Easy!" Here's what one reader says about our Video Books:

Here's a really cool and not very well known cake decorating idea. For super smooth buttercream, first smooth out what you can with an icing spatula. Let it dry for about 15 minutes to form a crust. (This won't work with icing that won't crust).
Then lightly place a plain paper towel on the area to be smoothed. Gently rub it with the palm of your hand. The warmth of your hand will soften the icing just enough to smooth out any bumps and ridges. You can also use a fondant smoother on top of the paper towel. You'll be surprised at how smooth the surface gets! |
